🌿 Tree Types in Central Texas

Common tree species in the Austin area and how to care for them

Live Oak (Quercus virginiana)

The iconic tree of Central Texas, live oaks are semi-evergreen with distinctive spreading canopies. They're extremely drought-tolerant once established and can live for centuries. Primary concern: Oak Wilt. Avoid pruning February–June. Deep infrequent watering encourages deep root systems.

Texas Cedar Elm (Ulmus crassifolia)

The most common native elm in Texas, cedar elms are tough, drought-tolerant shade trees. They're tolerant of Austin's heavy clay soils and intense heat. They turn golden yellow in fall. Susceptible to elm leaf beetle and elm aphid but rarely need treatment.

Pecan (Carya illinoinensis)

Texas' state tree, pecans are large shade trees that produce edible nuts. They need deep, well-drained soils and regular watering during drought. Susceptible to pecan scab fungus and several insects. Annual fertilization with zinc is often beneficial.

Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum)

Often found along Central Texas creeks and rivers, bald cypress are tough, long-lived trees that turn bronze in fall. They tolerate flooding and drought equally well. Their feathery foliage and distinctive 'knees' make them prized landscape specimens.

Ashe Juniper (Juniperus ashei)

Commonly called 'cedar' in Texas, Ashe juniper is a native shrub/tree that dominates Hill Country landscapes. It's highly drought-tolerant and wildlife-friendly. Many landowners manage it through selective clearing to reduce water competition and cedar fever pollen.

Monterrey Oak (Quercus polymorpha)

A fast-growing, semi-evergreen oak native to Mexico that thrives in Central Texas heat and alkaline soils. More resistant to Oak Wilt than other oaks. Growing in popularity as a landscape tree for its beauty, adaptability, and rapid growth rate.
